Movie Review ... The Good German

Cate Blanchett gets an A+. George Clooney's performance is an A. This film is unusual because it is produced in black and white; new photography on top of historical film. If you enjoy historical yarns, and if you don't mind a wrap up story during the months in Germany after WW2 when the Allies were slicing the pie, you may enjoy this movie.

Watch out for the allusion to sex for sale. It's included. Forgive the mediocre screenplay. Dialogue is obviously not 1945ish. Fire the casting company, that hired Spiderman (Toby Maguire) to portray a part in which his youthful inexperience just didn't get the potato pancakes fried up right.

There's a little too much hide and seek, and there's way too much hard handedness from goons presented as spyboys. What did Clooney do? He was a journalist wearing a captain's uniform who never did an ounce of journalism. Hey, director Soderberg, you've gotta get those dots to connect next time. This is a 7 for a good try, but there are lots of gaps.

Black and White: Automatic zero for this reviewer.

Did this reviewer forget the part where the other German woman ate the ham sandwich like she was in a speed eating contest? That was noteworthy.

Did those potato pancakes have a little onion? Were they fried in butter? I like reviews with those little foody details.
