Movie Review... Star Trek (2009)

Briefly, Star Trek (2009), taken in the rich context of the television series and a half dozen full length movies, is the second 10 rating I have awarded.

This film is perfectly tailored to fit onto a tapestry of make believe science and space exploration begun by men of genius decades ago. The characters are familiar, with casting that really hit the mark. Acting is wonderful, and like it or not, the main characters mimic quirks made famous by Shatner's crew.

The story line is not unbelievable. Romulans, warp speed, revenge, emotion... all seem right for the prequel story.

All right... if we didn't have decades of lead up to appreciate the characters and their personal stories, would this movie be a 10? Well, no. But, we do have the background. The whole series of shows and movies is fantastic, and this film is the topper. I'm glad Doc and I got to see it. It was on IMAX, a great way to have the experience.

REVIEWER #2: I agree that this movie is really good because of the prior Star Trek phenomenon that has been going on for decades. However, this is still a great movie. It's always interesting when filmmakers bring a movie about the beginning of a saga, like Star Wars, to life because you're just not sure what to expect. Star Trek is an exception to the rule as this movie could stand by itself. It's just a riveting, keep you watching, motivating movie that really gets in touch with the past movies with things like mannerisms and gestures and even a few "Dammit Jim, I'm doctor not a brick layer" quotes. IMAX just made it better. I agree that a high mark is required, so to go where no man has gone before it will take warp 9.5.

Have you noticed that there's no prequel for the soap opera Star Trek series starring the old stage actor Luc?

I liked the 2009 version, but I'd wished for a cameo like my old bud. I was busy hawkin' Price Line that week.
